BlowBot

MIT musical robots vs. carbon-based musicians was totally disappointing…really they weren’t robots at all; they were just acoustic structures triggered by midi sequencer commands from some computer somewhere behind the stage... the long and short of it is, if that’s their definition of a robot, than so were the player pianos of the mid 1800s… or a cd player for that matter. And by that definition, a robot is any machine that Is capable of accepting a code and performing a routine… sorry, but awesome robots would react to situations in which variety is generated, not just simply play back information pointed from some surface. The only thing even slightly robotic about those robots was if you think about it in terms of ‘this machine can do such and such that people are incapable of doing because of human limitations'… but then do we call bees robots? They do things that people can’t do… the whole thing was sooo suspect.
ADDENDUM: let me add something to this in order to clarify some of my horn tooting…
I admired the robotics people and coders; they defintely created some cool robot effects, especially the hydraulic robot dancer. I amire the coders for their technical savvy, in the same way that a cook might respect a carpenter… but as an institution that purports progressive technology based music; they need to check themselves before they wreck themselves. What Ovalprocess revealed, while not being any where near as technical, is far more of a sophisticated statement on human/oid/cybernetic/machinistic variety and dialogue, at least in terms of audio politics….and that’s the stuff that interests me. so it’s not that MIT is ‘wrong’ in this instance, it’s just that they are purporting a notion about robotics and music that hasn’t taken into account the myriad of aesethtic tensions that exist in the electronic music realm... just shows how truly insular communities can be. It actually reminded me of the kid in Squid & Whale claiming ‘Hey You’ as his own.
Anyway, these things are good for exactly this – formulating a position said matters… precariousness-as-fun. And there was free vitamin water.

Gordo Goes Big

Our dear Rebecca Gordon got some good press in the Weekly Dig -- so here's to her new gallery and all the crazy art fuckers who will make their way into her sanctified dominion of the weird. NOW SELL THY ARTE! Good jorb God! So Gordo... maybe you'd consider a multimedia installation/review of my disasterous romance with BABLEEP KAPLOW! Watch as the giant DINGA BAT descends on its prey! Talk about grace under pressure...
I have tons of evidence, and in keeping with your gallery's theme -- it's far too messy for a normal room...
